Ο Fredric R. Jameson, γεννήθηκε το 1934 στο Κλήβελαντ των ΗΠΑ. Σπούδασε φιλοσοφία και κοινωνικές επιστήμες στην Ευρώπη (Αιξ-αν-Προβάνς, Μόναχο, Βερολίνο) και έλαβε το διδακτορικό του από το πανεπιστήμιο Yale. Δίδαξε στο Harvard, στο πανεπιστήμιο της Καλιφόρνιας (Σαν Ντιέγκο) και στο Yale, προτού μετακινηθεί στο πανεπιστήμιο Duke, όπου έγινε καθηγητής συγκριτικής λογοτεχνίας.
